Bruichladdich Black Art Edition 11.1 is a 24-year-old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, the eleventh instalment of the cult "enigma" series, in which the full recipe remains a secret. The whisky was created from casks dating back to before the distillery's renaissance, matured exclusively on Islay, and the definitive recipe is known only to head distiller Adam Hannett, with the composition and provenance of the casks remaining a mystery.

The Black Art series has a character all of its own compared with the rest of the producer's range. Unlike standard Bruichladdich releases, neither the cask types nor the barley variety are disclosed here, whereas the regular editions do provide this information. The Black Art series was launched in 2009 by the then Master Distiller, Jim McEwan. This is the seventh release in the series under Adam Hannett's direction, and the spirit itself comes from the 1994 vintage. Black Art Edition 11.1 is a 1994 vintage of unpeated single malt matured entirely on Islay for 24 years.

Bruichladdich consistently adheres to a natural bottling style. Bruichladdich whiskies are unpeated, floral and complex; distilled by trickle distillation from 100% Scottish barley using much of the original Victorian equipment, with the spirit itself being natural, non-chill-filtered and free of added colouring. The strength is 44.2%. This is the eleventh limited edition in the series, Adam Hannett's seventh Black Art release, matured entirely on Islay, at 44.2% ABV, non-chill-filtered and with no added colouring.

The aromatic profile is fruity and multi-layered. The nose immediately offers dried fruits, leather and a hint of citrus, followed by a delicate bouquet of rosehip syrup, poached pear and sweet mango. On the palate, dried fruits, barley sugar, a note of leather and toasted oak give way to a velvety butterscotch sweetness, balanced by nutty praline and hints of coconut, while the long, rounded finish calls to mind rich Christmas cake with notes of sultanas, marzipan and lingering honey.

Edition 11.1 is a collector's item. It is a 1994 vintage unpeated single malt matured entirely on Islay for 24 years and, in keeping with all Black Art releases, the types of casks used in the vatting are not disclosed, with the recipe known only to Adam Hannett. The eleventh edition of the Black Art series is a 24-year-old unpeated single malt from casks filled before the distillery's renaissance of 2001; only the head distiller knows the recipe, and the barley variety and cask types remain undisclosed for this one-off release.
