Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2025 is a dry white wine from Marlborough on New Zealand's South Island, made entirely from the Sauvignon Blanc grape. This is the 41st vintage of the wine that established Marlborough's reputation as the benchmark region for this variety.
The Cloudy Bay winery was founded in 1985, with its headquarters and vineyards located in the Wairau Valley at the northern tip of the South Island. Cloudy Bay Vineyards is today part of Estates & Wines, the wine division of Moët Hennessy, and the winery and plantings are situated in the Wairau Valley in Marlborough. The fruit for the Sauvignon Blanc comes largely from vineyards planted in the Rapaura, Renwick and Brancott Valley subregions within the Wairau Valley, where the warm, dry maritime climate and well-draining, gravelly soils favour this variety.
The 2025 vintage was shaped by a cooler course of the season. The Sauvignon Blanc harvest began on 21 March in cool but stable autumn conditions, with the first fruit picked from the stonier, warmer sites in the Rapaura subregion; the harvest proceeded steadily over about a month, until 20 April. The fruit was picked during the cooler night and early morning hours, then destemmed and, within a few hours of harvest, transferred to tank presses; the free-run and lightly pressed juice was chilled for 48–72 hours, then racked off the sediment and inoculated with yeast. According to the wine-pages critic, a small portion of the blend, 1.8%, was fermented in large-format oak vats, part of it with wild yeasts.
The profile of this vintage is dominated by a citrus axis. Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2025 is open and expressive on the nose, with aromas of peach, lilac blossom, kaffir lime and freshly squeezed lemon; the palate is bright and multilayered, with a note of lemon curd and white nectarine, as well as accents of sea salt and dune grasses; the mid-palate carries sharp, citrusy acidity and an elegant, long finish. Critic James Suckling described it as lively, rounded and juicy, with lemons, limes, fresh herbs and mild spices on the nose, moving into a medium structure with fresh acidity and a finish full of limes.
