Real Companhia Velha Fundador Tawny is a Portuguese fortified Port wine of the Tawny category, originating from the Douro region and bottled at 19% strength. The brand was launched in 1928 as a tribute to King Dom José I, founder of Real Companhia Velha, and today it is among the best-selling Port wines in Portugal.

Behind the wine stands one of the oldest houses of the Douro. Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro, also known as Real Companhia Velha, was founded on 10 September 1756 by decree of King Dom José I, under the auspices of his prime minister Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo. The blend is based on classic Douro varieties – Touriga nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta barroca and Tinto cão.

The Ports selected for this blend ferment in autovinifiers in contact with the skins until fermentation is stopped by the addition of grape aguardente, and the maturation process is then carried out in oak vats for an average of five years. Maturation and the associated oxidation in oak cause the colour to shift from red to orange (tawny), while the notes of fresh fruit gain nuances of dried fruit and nuts, lending the wine a subtle elegance.

In the aromatic and flavour profile the producer highlights the young, aromatic character of this Tawny. This young and aromatic Port Tawny presents youthful notes of dried fruit, honey and raisins, and on the palate it is fruity and generous, with a harmonious sweetness meeting a fresh, lively acidity.
