Riesling 2022 from Winnica Turnau is a white, dry varietal wine from Baniewice in the West Pomeranian province, one of Poland's largest vineyards. It was made entirely from the Riesling grape, fermented in a large wooden vat before being bottled.
Winnica Turnau was founded by the Turnau family, and from the outset it has collaborated on winemaking with German oenologist Frank Faust from the Rheingau. Tastings are led by co-owner and business manager Jacek Turnau together with Frank Faust, the German oenologist from the Rheingau who works permanently in Baniewice and has been involved in producing the estate's wines from the very beginning.
The 2022 vintage was shaped by the particular weather conditions of West Pomerania. The winter of 2021/2022 was snowy, with many frosty days; early spring saw little rainfall, and the whole of spring was rather dry, though this did not delay the growing season, and there were no spring frosts; the summer was warm but also rainy, and the autumn dry, with moderate temperatures. In Baniewice, 2022 pampered the grapes not only with summer sun and ripeness, but also, thanks to the cooler autumn nights, tempered the aromatics and minerality of the wine produced in this vintage.
On the nose and palate the wine leads with fruit and acidity. Despite its appley youthfulness, it does not lack floral notes and a delicate tropical accent; the pronounced grapefruit acidity is rounded off by a honeyed envelope, while a pleasant pear aftertaste lingers in the mouth. In its profile the producer indicates a nose of pear, honey and flowers, and a palate of grapefruit, pear and apple. The wine's parameters are residual sugar 5.8 g/l, acidity 6.7 g/l and alcohol content 11.5%.
In the assessment of industry critic Tomasz Prange-Barczyński of Ferment magazine, the 2022 vintage received 88 points. It was described as an elegant, varietal, apple-and-citrus, pure Riesling; fairly generous, nicely ripe, yet light, juicy, with a subtle structure and rounded edges. For pairing, the producer suggests poultry, seafood, soft cheeses and pasta.
