The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old is a single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, whose name refers to the combination of two types of oak – European and American – in sherry-seasoned casks. Bottled at 40% ABV.

The Double Cask line debuted in 2016 and, within the distillery's portfolio, sits between the Sherry Oak collection and the Colour Collection. The spirit matures in sherry-seasoned American and European oak casks for a minimum of 12 years, combining the classic European oak style of The Macallan with the sweet accent of American oak. The casks are made and sherry-seasoned in Jerez de la Frontera in Spain before being shipped to the distillery in Speyside.

The whisky's character is built by two sources of wood. American oak brings the sweetness of vanilla and fresh fruit, while European oak balances it with soft spices and dried fruit. In the 40% version, Whisky Advocate notes earthy sherry and old leather on the nose, with toffee, polished oak and cherry blossom. On the palate it is a medium- to full-bodied whisky, with notes of sherry, orange, cocoa, nutty vanilla and developing baking spices against a honeyed backdrop.

The producer itself describes the aromatic profile more concisely. The nose reveals aromas of fudge with candied orange and lemon, alongside vanilla and soft spice; on the palate, raisins in milk chocolate and creamy toffee are balanced by orange peel and gentle spice, while the finish is medium, with sweet oak.

The whisky has a natural colour, derived entirely from the cask wood. Following its launch, it received a unanimous Double Gold award.
