The Macallan Rare Cask 2024 Release is a Scotch single malt from Speyside, built around a dominant note of sweet raisin and hand-picked casks. For the 2024 edition, the Macallan team selected casks offering rich, smooth complexity accentuated by notes of sweet raisin. Rare Cask was introduced in 2014 as a permanent fixture of the 1824 Master Series, and after that series was discontinued in 2018 it remained in the portfolio as an annual small batch; between 2018 and 2019 it was released three times a year, before moving to a single annual batch from 2020 onwards.
At the heart of this edition lies maturation in oak. The whisky was created exclusively from hand-picked American and European sherry seasoned oak casks. Macallan consistently emphasises the role of wood in shaping the character of the spirit – the mahogany-red Rare Cask single malt showcases two of the distillery's most defining characteristics: sherry seasoned oak casks and natural colour. These rare Macallan casks deliver a wholly natural, deep ruby-mahogany colour and an intense, complex flavour profile.
On the nose and palate, the distillery's signature fruity, dessert-like profile comes through. The aroma reveals soft notes of vanilla with rich raisin, followed by a sweet fusion of fresh apple, lemon and orange; on the palate, intense sweet raisin dominates, giving way to vanilla and dark chocolate with layers of light citrus peel, while the finish is long, rich and velvety. The spirit is bottled at 43%.
The whisky comes from a distillery with a well-established history. Macallan was founded by Alexander Reid in 1824 on the Easter Elchies estate on the banks of the River Spey and was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to obtain a legal licence. The 2024 edition is a limited availability release worldwide.
