Armorik is the first single malt whisky from French Brittany, produced by the independent, family-owned Warenghem distillery. The distillery was established in 1900 and initially produced liqueurs and spirits. In 1982, it became the first in Brittany to begin whisky production — the first casks were filled a year later, and in 1987 Whisky Breton (WB), a blended whisky, made its debut. In 1998, the first single malt without age statement was released, and another milestone was the 10-year-old Armorik Millesime 2002. Brittany — Scotland, only warmer Since 2015, Brittany has been officially recognized as a whisky production region. The climate here resembles western Scotland — it's humid, rainy, and the sea breeze accompanies the maturation of whisky in casks. The only significant difference is a temperature a few degrees higher than in Scotland, which influences faster interaction between the distillate and the cask wood. Craftsmanship from grain to bottle The entire production process of Armorik — from grain milling to bottling — takes place on the distillery premises. Water comes from the Rest Avel spring, and French barley is used in production (in the case of blended whisky, Breton wheat is also used). Distillation is double and takes place in traditional copper pot stills. In maturation, Armorik distinguishes itself by using casks made from Breton oak — local wood that gives the whisky a character different from classic American or European oak casks.
