Real Companhia Velha is one of the oldest producers in the region. It was founded in 1756 by José I, King of Portugal. Since that time, for over 250 years, it has continuously produced excellent wines and worked on the outstanding reputation of its products. Currently, Real Companhia Velha is considered one of the leading producers of port and wines from the Douro region. It owns 5 estates in the river valley, with a total vineyard area of over 550 hectares. In the production process, the company combines tradition with modernity to achieve the best results and excellent quality. This quality is regularly awarded by all authorities in the wine industry, including Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and Decanter. Port is produced in Douro: the oldest region with a registered designation of origin (PDO). The region is located in northeastern Portugal, along the Douro River valley. It covers an area of over 250,000 hectares, of which over 40,000 hectares are vineyards. The Mediterranean climate dominates here, with cool winters (-5°C) and very hot summers (up to 45°C). Slate soils prevail, with an admixture of granite, of low fertility. Due to the steep slopes, the vineyards are mainly terraced.
