Rodney Strong

The company's history began in 1959, when Mr. Rod Strong envisioned Sonoma County as a special place for wine production. Rodney Strong Vineyards was the thirteenth winery established in this newly discovered wine region, and from today's perspective, its founder can be called a true pioneer of the region who paved the way toward a bright winemaking future for Sonoma viticulture. Like few before him, he understood the potential of the county's soil and climate for producing world-class wines. His desire was to produce wines from a specific place. He was the first to create wines in Alexander Valley (Cabernet Sauvignon). This was in 1974, a full decade before it was included in the AVA classification. He was also one of the pioneers in Russian River (Pinot Noir) and the first to recognize the potential of the Chalk Hill area as an exceptional habitat for Chardonnay. He planted his first Chardonnay vines in 1965, and in 1977 he introduced the world to the first Chalk Hill Chardonnay. In 1983, thanks to Rod's efforts, Chalk Hill was recognized as an official AVA. Since 1989, the company has been run by the Klein family, people full of passion, committed to creating excellent wines while implementing sustainable agriculture policies. Today, Rodney Strong owns 11 vineyards with sustainability certification and produces wines in the finest appellations of Sonoma County. The winery and tasting room are located south of the charming town of Healdsburg, in the Russian River Valley appellation.
