Aberlour A'bunadh is a single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, bottled at cask strength – an intense, "sherried" interpretation of the distillery's style. The name A'bunadh means "the original" in Gaelic and is a tribute to the founder of the Aberlour distillery, James Fleming. Each batch carries its own batch number, which is why the strength and nuances of flavour vary between releases; this bottle was bottled at 61.4% ABV.

Aberlour is a historic distillery located in the heart of Speyside – Scotland's most important whisky-producing region. Aberlour was founded in 1879 by James Fleming and operates in Speyside. The whisky is created using traditional methods, by hand from start to finish, and its character stems above all from the choice of casks.

At the heart of the A'bunadh style is maturation in Spanish sherry casks. A'bunadh, from the Gaelic "of the origin", matures exclusively in Oloroso sherry butts. It is a natural cask strength single malt whisky, produced without modern chill-filtration methods and without the addition of water. Maturation exclusively in first-fill Oloroso casks is something of a rarity in the world of Scotch, and the whisky is non-chill-filtered and bottled at cask strength. The result of this process is, as the producer describes it, a heavier and creamier single malt whisky than most have ever tasted – exceptionally aromatic, with an intense raisiny character.

In the glass it is a classic "sherry bomb". The colour is deep amber. On the nose there are aromas of mixed spices, praline and spiced orange in harmony with deep notes of Oloroso sherry. The palate is filled with orange, black cherries, dried fruit and ginger, underpinned by bitter dark chocolate and enriched with long notes of sherry and oak. The whisky is exceptionally full-bodied and creamy. The finish is powerful and long, with bittersweet notes of exotic spices, dark chocolate and oak.

Given its high strength, this whisky is best savoured slowly, neat, or with the addition of a few drops of water. A few drops of water tame the heat of the alcohol and reveal the more subtle layers hidden beneath its muscular surface. This is an after-dinner dram, and it will pair superbly with dark chocolate, mature cheeses or desserts based on dried fruit. It is worth remembering that this is a non-chill-filtered whisky, bottled at natural cask strength, with each batch constituting a unique, numbered release.
