Jack Daniel's Triple Mash is a blended straight whiskey in the bottled-in-bond classification, produced at the distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, and bottled at 50% ABV. It is the third expression in the brand's Bonded Series, combining three different distillates from the same producer in a single blend.
The blend is built on three separate bonded straight whiskeys from Jack Daniel's. Triple Mash is a blend of three straight, bottled-in-bond Jack Daniel's whiskeys: 60% Tennessee Rye, 20% Tennessee Whiskey and 20% American Malt. Each component has its own mash bill: 60% Jack Daniel's Tennessee Rye (70% Rye, 18% Corn, 12% Malted Barley), 20% Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey (80% Corn, 12% Rye, 8% Malted Barley) and 20% Jack Daniel's American Malt (100% Malted Barley). The malt component is the most unusual one for the brand – American malt whiskey has been distilled by the company since 2013, is made from 100% malted barley, and in Triple Mash it meets the bottled-in-bond requirement, meaning a malt aged at least four years.
The bottled-in-bond classification imposes strict production rules. As a bottled-in-bond whiskey, Triple Mash must be distilled by a single distiller during a single distilling season, matured in a government bonded warehouse for at least four years and bottled at 100 proof. In practice this means that each of the distillates was produced in Lynchburg during the same distilling season, matured in accordance with the requirements of the Bottled in Bond Act, and was then blended and bottled at 100 proof. The barrels are hand-selected for deeper colour, flavour and aroma, which translates into a darker, more structured and distinctly oaky character.
The aromatic profile reveals the interplay of the three styles. On the nose, gentle, earthy aromas with dark raspberries, plum, fig and Earl Grey tea; there is also cedar and pine, which build an interwoven note of oak. On the palate and in the finish, grain and malt return – the medium-long finish brings toasted grain, caramel, dried fruit and malty sweetness. The texture is round and slightly oily, while the high strength delivers a distinct, peppery warmth.
