Speyburn 15 Year Old is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Speyside region, bottled at 46% ABV and matured in a combination of American and Spanish oak casks. This fifteen-year-old whisky was added to the Speyburn distillery's range in the second half of 2017.

The distillery lies in Rothes, in the heart of Speyside. Speyburn was founded in 1897 by John Hopkins & Company, and the site itself was chosen for its pristine water source, the Granty Burn, a small tributary of the River Spey. Speyburn remains the only distillery drawing its process water from the nearby Granty Burn, and its production methods have changed little since John Hopkins' first batch in 1897. A distinctive element of the profile is the method of distillation and condensation. The wash goes into a large 28,000-litre wash still, which simultaneously feeds two smaller spirit stills – an unusual arrangement that favours a light, fruity spirit. The stills have wide, onion-shaped bases and slender, tall necks that force greater reflux and copper contact. Traditional worm tub condensers are used here, giving the spirit a fuller body and a slightly sulphurous depth, which explains why the distillate stands up so well to sherry casks.

Maturation relies on two types of wood, and their roles are clearly divided. Bourbon casks contribute vanilla, sherry casks bring forest fruits, and Speyburn 15 Year Old marries the two. In this version, the bottling parameters also matter. The 15- and 18-year-olds are entirely natural: non-chill filtered, natural colour and bottled at 46%.

The aroma and palate are dominated by sweet-spicy notes and dark chocolate. Dark chocolate and warm spices, raisins, candied citrus, vanilla, orange and toffee. On the palate the profile opens up more broadly. Notes of orange, toffee, vanilla and leather appear, held together by a gentle spice, while the long finish carries a warming spice, sweet and creamy. Independent tasting confirms the weight of this spirit: the whisky remains full, palate-coating and thick, while a drop or two of water draws out a little more spice.

The whisky has earned industry accolades. This version won silver at the International Wine & Spirits Competition 2017. With its fuller body and dry, spicy finish, it pairs well with toffee desserts – the fifteen-year-old at 46% was a superb match for sticky toffee pudding.
