Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Rye is an American rye whiskey from the distillery in Versailles, Kentucky, built around a high proportion of rye in the mash bill and bottled at 45.2%. The mash bill consists of 53% rye, 33% corn and 14% malted barley, with the pre-Prohibition-style rye proportion harking back to the original American rye whiskeys. The expression went on sale in early 2015 as part of the Woodford whiskey family, with Master Distiller Chris Morris having worked on it since 2006, responding to the expectations of rye lovers awaiting a release from this historic distillery.
The brand is owned by Brown-Forman. The whiskey is made from a relatively low-rye mash bill (53% rye, 33% corn, 14% malt) as a combination of distillates from Woodford and from the Brown-Forman plant in Louisville. The Woodford team combines distillation in copper pot stills and column stills, with the copper pot stills adding more fruit and body to the product. The whiskey matures in new, charred American oak barrels.
The profile is dominated by spice balanced by fruit and sweetness. On the nose the whiskey is spicy, with pronounced notes of rye, black pepper, cedar and cassia bark, sweetened by a touch of marzipan, while pear, apple and almond emerge in the background. On the palate, clove, rye, mint, molasses, sorghum and honey interweave with hints of apple and malt. The texture is oily, with dark brown sugar, dried fruit, tobacco and a surprising waft of charred barrel. On the palate the whiskey is hot and lean, sweet and spicy, until a bitter layer of rye flows in, giving a dry finish as the oak intensifies.
As a Kentucky Straight Rye, the whiskey must be at least four years old, although there is no age statement on the bottle. In a cocktail, clove, rye, mint, molasses, sorghum and honey combine with hints of apple and malt, and the finish is long and sweetly spicy. It is a profile that works both neat and in classic rye-based cocktails.
