The Heiderer-Mayer winery covers 35 hectares and is located in a small, idyllic village called Baumgarten am Wagram, 50 km northwest of Vienna in Lower Austria. Additionally, part of the grapes comes from contract farmers cooperating with the vineyard. Interestingly, they are the only winemakers in their locality. The vineyard was established in 1844. It has been in the hands of the current owners Gabriele and Helmut Mayer since 1990, with their three sons Reinhard, Stefan and Johannes devoting more and more time to the family project. The eldest of them, Reinhard, is responsible for vinification, having gained his winemaking experience in the neighboring Kremstal region and in Australia. The family's motto is to cultivate vines in accordance with ecological principles and strive to transfer the highest quality from grapes to bottle. Using their experience and individual approach to each grape variety, wines are produced here that offer an optimal quality-to-price ratio. White wines obviously dominate, and the undisputed star is the Gruner Veltliner variety, growing on south-facing loess terraces. Other important varieties are fruity Chardonnay and elegant Riesling. Red wines from local varieties play an important role, particularly Zweigelt, Saint Laurent and international Cabernet Sauvignon with an exceptionally velvety character. Thanks to very gentle pressing of the grapes and controlled cold fermentation, the wines remain true to the character of the varieties from which they are made.
