Casamigos Reposado is a reposado-category tequila from the Mexican state of Jalisco, made from 100% blue Weber agave and aged in American white oak barrels. The brand was founded on the initiative of George Clooney and Rande Gerber, and is now owned by the Diageo group.
The raw material is Tequilana Weber Azul agave sourced from the Jalisco highlands (Los Altos), where it grows in red, clay-rich soil. The agaves are hand-selected and cultivated in the red clay of the Jalisco Highlands, then roasted in traditional brick ovens for 72 hours; an additional 80-hour fermentation process gives Casamigos its distinctive profile. The producer uses double distillation. After slow roasting and double distillation, the Reposado rests for at least six months in American white oak barrels. In practice, some industry sources cite an ageing period of seven months in whiskey barrels. The spirit matures for seven months in reconditioned bourbon barrels and is bottled at 40% alcohol.
The colour is golden honey. The distiller's tasting notes point to a golden-honey hue and an aroma of caramel with hints of cocoa, while the palate offers dried fruit and spicy oak with a touch of sweet agave. The texture is silky, and the finish medium to long. After seven months of ageing, the Reposado is soft, lightly oaky, with accents of caramel and cocoa, a silky texture and a medium to long finish. A review from the Distiller portal rounds out this picture with further notes. The nose brings a lightly smoked, charred note and the scent of peanut shells with vanilla, maple and spiced barrel, with the agave accent still lively; the palate reveals depth of spice with tobacco and leather along with a sweet, rich flavour, while the finish closes with peppery and slightly bitter tones, ending on the sweeter side.
Bottled at 40% ABV. This is a tequila to drink neat or over a large ice cube; it also works well in citrus cocktails and variations on the margarita.
