Maker's Mark is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon from the distillery in Loretto, distinguished by a recipe based on wheat instead of rye. The traditional Maker's Mark mash bill is 70 percent corn, 16 percent red winter wheat and 14 percent malted barley. Instead of the more commonly used rye, wheat serves as the secondary grain here, lending the spirit a smoother, sweeter character. It is bottled at 45% ABV.
The brand's history dates back to the early 1950s. Maker's Mark was created in 1953, and the first bottle hand-dipped in wax reached the market in 1958. The distillery is located in Loretto, Kentucky, about an hour and a half southeast of Louisville. The distinctive packaging, including the iconic sealed red wax, was designed by Margie Samuels, the founder's wife, reportedly inspired by her collection of cognac bottles.
During maturation the distillery employs a rarely encountered practice. Maker's Mark is one of the few distilleries that move barrels from the upper to the lower levels of the warehouses during ageing in order to even out temperature differences; the upper floors are exposed to the greatest temperature fluctuations throughout the year, so rotating the barrels ensures that the bourbon in all of them has the same quality and flavour. The barrels used in the batches are usually 6–7 years old, and the absence of an age statement allows the distillery to select barrels by taste rather than age. The spirit carries no age statement, following a maturation "to taste" approach, and is not chill-filtered.
The profile is dominated by a sweet, wheated smoothness. This is a spirit in a softer, sweeter style with no harshness; it has a velvety texture and balanced notes of bright cherry, delicate vanilla, caramel and a touch of gentle spice. Industry reviewers expand on this picture: the sip is sweet, with caramel and vanilla forming the bourbon's core, complemented by cinnamon, dark cherry and a hint of toasted oak, and despite a slight astringency in the background the spirit remains fairly silky. The finish grows progressively drier, with black pepper, tannins and a note of barrel char; it is fairly light and of medium length.
The producer points to its versatility in serving. Maker's Mark works best served neat, on the rocks or in a classic Whisky Sour. The set includes two glasses, making it a ready-made tasting kit.
