Maker's Mark 46 is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon finished with French oak, distinguished by a maturation process using ten seared staves. Introduced in 2010, the bourbon is made from fully matured Maker's Mark at cask strength, into whose barrel specially seared French oak staves are inserted, after which the whisky matures for several more months before bottling. It is the recipe of Bill Samuels Jr., son of founders Bill and Margie, and the brand's first major new expression since the launch of the classic Maker's Mark.
The foundation is the wheated Maker's Mark bourbon, in which winter wheat takes the place of rye. Maker's Mark 46 begins as standard Maker's Mark, a wheated bourbon produced in batches of less than 1,000 gallons. The French oak staves were selected from Independent Stave Company, Maker's Mark's long-standing cooperage, and designated Stave Profile No. 46 – hence the product's name. After traditional maturation, the bourbon is transferred into barrels fitted with ten staves and rests for a further nine weeks in a cool, limestone cellar; a longer period would give it too intense an oak flavour.
On the nose, the French oak comes through clearly. Maker's Mark 46 opens with seared French oak and cinnamon-raisin toast, which intertwine with the classic notes of vanilla, brown sugar and light caramel, while a subtle hint of crème brûlée adds a dose of sweetness. On the palate the profile remains sweet and spicy. The flavour begins with dark honey and caramel, toasted oak, cinnamon, clove, apricot, toasted vanilla, orange peel and roasted bread, after which yet more oak returns; this is a bourbon led by oak spice, strongly marked by the ten French oak staves. The soft wheat in the mash bill tempers the punch of the spices and keeps the expression in balance.
The finish is long, especially for this strength. The close lingers noticeably, with a slightly drying impression of oak, clove and a hint of aniseed, ending with a delicate menthol accent. The bourbon is bottled at 47%, slightly higher than standard Maker's Mark.
