Malecon Reserva Superior Aged 15 Years is an exceptional rum from Panama. Its long, 15-year maturation in re-charred bourbon barrels has beautifully mellowed its flavour, creating a delightful tasting experience. The art of ageing rum is not merely a matter of leaving it in barrels for as long as possible. The high temperatures in Panama differ considerably from those prevailing in many European countries and cause the rum to mature three to four times faster here. On the other hand, the so-called "angel's share", i.e. the amount of rum that evaporates from the barrels each year, is significantly greater. To prevent the barrels from emptying completely after 15 years, the distillery's head master blender blends their contents in a large vat and then pours them back into barrels to ensure maturation at full capacity. This guarantees consistently high and reproducible rum quality across all vintages. On the nose we find aromas of wood, walnuts, dried fruit and honey. On the palate it is complex and round. Wood-derived tannins appear at first, contrasting perfectly with the sweetness of ripe fruit, vanilla, toffee and spices. The finish is long, with soft notes of charred wood. This is a rum with a distinctive structure, yet easy to drink. It tastes very good combined with tonic or in a fruity Caipirissima cocktail. It is best enjoyed, however, at room temperature in a tasting glass.
