Oban 10 Year Old Coastal Orchard is a single malt from the Highlands, released as part of the Diageo Special Releases 2024 collection and bottled at cask strength of 58%. It is one of the few Oban expressions available in a cask strength version, with natural colour and no chill filtration.
The Oban distillery is one of the smallest and oldest in Scotland, operating in the harbour town of the same name on the west coast. Oban has been producing single malt since 1794, and the distillery itself is wedged between granite cliffs and the sea, in the picturesque harbour town of the same name on Scotland's west coast.
What sets this edition apart is its cask programme. This year's bottling was matured in refill casks and then finished in charred American oak casks seasoned with Oloroso sherry. The approach is unusual, as sherry casks are normally toasted rather than charred, and are usually larger than a standard barrel, which makes this treatment quite rare. According to the producer, the Oloroso sherry-seasoned casks bring notes of baked apple and delicate streaks of sea-salted vanilla to this whisky.
On the nose there are salty sea breezes, pepper, sun-bleached oak, vanilla and salty smoke, with hints of damson plum. The charred oak adds a further spicy dimension – underlining a bouquet of spicy nutmeg, sweet cinnamon and touches of clove. On the palate, as the WhiskyNotes reviewer observes, there emerges a layer of sweet fruit – tart apples, stewed peaches and sultanas – but the sharp spiciness quickly overshadows the fruitiness.
In this expression the influence of the wood is pronounced. The charred wood has left a greater mark here than the Oloroso. The whisky can be served neat or with a cube of ice.
