Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old is a Scotch single malt whisky from the Highlands, produced at one of the smallest distilleries in the Diageo portfolio, located in Royal Deeside just next to Balmoral Castle. Today, Royal Lochnagar is leased by Diageo from the Abergeldie estate and remains the smallest whisky distillery owned by the company.
The history of this place dates back to the mid-19th century. In 1845 John Begg founded and built the "new" Lochnagar distillery, which forms the basis of the plant operating today, and the long-standing links with the royal family brought the first Royal Warrant in 1848, when Begg invited Prince Albert to visit the distillery from nearby Balmoral Castle. This is where the "Royal" prefix in the name comes from. The distillery makes a relatively small amount of whisky, most of which goes into Johnnie Walker Black and Blue Label, but it also produces a standard twelve-year-old single malt intended for sale, bottled at 40% ABV.
The production process relies on traditional equipment. Royal Lochnagar works with one wash still and one spirit still – the wash still has a capacity of 6,700 litres and the spirit still 3,720 litres. The malt used in production is unpeated, which significantly influences the gentle, sweet character of this single malt. The twelve-year-old edition matures in a combination of casks. This is a Highland single malt aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.
In the aroma and taste of Royal Lochnagar 12, delicacy and sweetness lead the way. The nose reveals shaved wood, light toffee and a note of varnish, with linseed oil in the background, and later an acidity reminiscent of lychee. On the palate this delicate single malt offers fruit, shaved wood and light toffee; the taste is sweet at first, then takes on acidity, and the finish is dry, of medium length, with a pleasant, lingering aftertaste of sandalwood.
