Benrinnes 21 Year Old "Grand Crescendo" is a single malt from the Speyside region, the oldest expression in the Diageo Special Releases 2024 collection and a cask strength bottling. The distillery sits at the foot of Ben Rinnes mountain in Speyside, and its spirit has for years enjoyed a reputation for being robust and full in structure.
The whisky underwent double maturation. It was aged in refill casks and then given a second maturation in rejuvenated American and European oak wine casks, as well as in rejuvenated casks with heavily charred ends. Diageo does not disclose the type of wine used to season the casks. It was bottled at 55.4%, at natural cask strength, like all expressions in the Special Releases series. It is worth noting a discrepancy in the materials: some sources give a split of 15 years in refill casks and 6 years of second maturation, while others speak of 8 years refill and 13 years – the producer uses both wordings, so the exact breakdown remains ambiguous.
Fruit dominates the aroma. Juicy red and black fruits on the nose, with apple pie, strawberry jam, plum, morello cherry, graphite and vanilla fudge. Despite this fruitiness, the muscular character of Benrinnes remains in the background. On the palate the whisky shows layers and approachability: layered and fruity, with cherry, blackberry, raspberry coulis, a peak of spice, and then candied cherry and rose Turkish delight.
The flavour profile is built around the tension between fruit and cask. After the first stage in refill casks and the second maturation in rejuvenated oak with charred ends, this twenty-one-year-old whisky reveals a crescendo of overripe dark fruits, stewed pear, crushed fig and caramelised apple. There are also ripe red berries, spiced plums and dark chocolate, underscored by subtle notes of toasted oak and fresh green grapes.
