Casamigos Mezcal Joven is an unaged mezcal from Oaxaca, made entirely from Espadín agave using artisanal methods. It is produced from Espadín agave in collaboration with a family that has been making mezcal for five generations in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, Mexico. This is the first mezcal from the brand founded by George Clooney, Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman, acquired in 2017 by the Diageo group.
Production is based on traditional craftsmanship. The agaves are one hundred percent Espadín grown in Oaxaca; after harvesting, the piñas are split and roasted for 4–6 days in earthen pits lined with volcanic or river stone. This method of slow roasting gives the spirit its characteristic smoky profile. After 24 hours of cooling, crushing begins – the agave is milled using a Tahona wheel. Next comes natural fermentation: depending on the season, Casamigos Mezcal ferments for 6–8 days, after which it is distilled twice in covered copper alembic stills.
In the sensory profile, the producer emphasises balance. The aroma reveals herbal and fruity notes with a hint of smoke, while on the palate smoke and black pepper lead to a long, silky finish. Broader descriptions of the brand also mention harmonious accents of tamarind, pomegranate, banana and mango, fresh herbal aromas of mint as well as dried oregano and thyme, while delicate tones of smoke, notes of liquorice and mineral nuances lead to a long, silky finish.
Bottled at 40%, as a joven it remains an unaged and crystal-clear spirit. It works well served neat in a copita and as a base for smoky cocktails.
