Jim Beam White Label is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, the flagship expression from the brand based in Clermont, Kentucky, bottled at 40% ABV. Jim Beam is one of the oldest names in the industry and one of the best-selling bourbons in the USA and worldwide, often serving as the gateway to the rest of the distillery's portfolio.
The grain mash bill for this whiskey is based on 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley, where the corn shapes the sweetness and the rye brings a peppery counterpoint. The water comes from a local source: Jim Beam starts with water naturally filtered through the limestone shelf of central Kentucky. The same yeast strain has been used since the end of Prohibition, added to tanks of grain to create what is known as dona yeast, later used in fermentation. The bourbon is distilled at lower temperatures and to a strength no higher than 62.5%.
Maturation lasts a minimum of four years in new, charred oak barrels, in line with the strict regulations defining Kentucky Straight Bourbon. The distillate, at around 125 proof, goes into new, charred American oak barrels, each with a capacity of about 200 litres, after which the bunged barrels travel to warehouses set on the hills, where the changing seasons expand and contract the wood, and the caramelised sugars from the charred oak give the bourbon its flavour and colour.
The profile is dominated by a grain-and-oak sweetness. The nose offers watery caramel supported by Jim Beam's characteristic spiciness and corn, with deeper notes of vanilla, citrus peel and red liquorice with a light herbal accent. On the palate the body is very light, with a fruity-sweet opening, notes of vanilla and oak, leather and spice, while a touch of charred wood at the end of the sip adds depth. The finish is short, almost absent, with a gentle warmth.
Jim Beam White Label fits the role of a universal cocktail base and a whiskey to drink neat. Its balanced profile makes it a good base for classic cocktails such as an Old Fashioned, Manhattan or Whiskey Sour. In this set, the 0.7 l bottle is accompanied by a glass.
