Jim Beam is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey in its White Label expression – the flagship statement of the most recognisable bourbon brand in the United States, bottled at 40% ABV. Jim Beam Original, also known as White Label, is a Kentucky straight bourbon aged for at least four years. This bottle has a capacity of 1 litre.
Behind the brand stands the Beam family, whose distilling tradition reaches back to the end of the 18th century. Jim Beam traces its roots to 1795, when Jacob Beam sold his first barrel of corn whiskey in Kentucky, and today the Clermont plant, operating under the wing of Beam Suntory, still employs the traditional sour mash process, in which part of a previously fermented mash is added to each new batch to maintain consistency and depth of flavour. Jim Beam Original is made using the same yeast strain that dates back to the end of Prohibition in 1933.
The mash is based on three grains. The mash bill consists of corn, rye and malted barley. The bourbon is distilled at lower temperatures to no more than 62.5%, while White Label matures for four years and has a fairly high proportion of rye in the mash bill. Maturation lasts a minimum of four years in freshly charred, new American oak barrels.
The profile is dominated by the sweet side of bourbon with a rye accent. The nose is rather sweet, with delicate notes of vanilla and mown hay, a touch of fresh corn and grainy sweetness; the palate has good structure with notes of toasted oak, vanilla and crème anglaise, a little spice and pepper, while the finish brings toasted oak and resin with a hint of sweetness. Due to the 40% strength, the build is rather light. The nose offers a slight sweetness with vanilla, maple syrup and corn, and the palate is delicate, with caramel and another dose of vanilla.
Jim Beam White Label remains the brand's entry-level category. Matured in new, charred American oak barrels, it is the core bourbon in the Jim Beam portfolio. For food pairings it works with smoked pork and mature cheddar, whose salty sharpness contrasts with the grainy sweetness of the spirit.
