Jim Beam Black is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon from the American brand Jim Beam, in a 43% ABV version, aged longer than the standard Jim Beam White Label. In this set, the 0.7 l bottle is accompanied by a glass.
The brand stems from a family tradition dating back to the end of the 18th century. Since 1795, with a break for Prohibition, seven generations of the Beam family have been involved in producing whiskey for the company behind this brand. The name "Jim Beam" appeared in 1943 in honour of James B. Beam, who rebuilt the company after the end of Prohibition. Today the brand is owned by Suntory Holdings, which acquired it in 2014.
Unlike the entry-level release, this version draws its character from longer maturation. This 86 proof bourbon matures in American white oak barrels for longer than the original Jim Beam; it is precisely those additional years that give it a full structure with notes of rounded caramel and warm oak. Historically the edition carried an 8-year age statement, but over time the strength of the spirit was lowered to 86 proof (43% ABV), and around 2014 the bourbon usually contained liquid with an average age of 6.5 years, which led to it being renamed Jim Beam Black "Extra-Aged" with no stated age in 2015.
The profile is dominated by sweet and oaky notes that are classic for the style. The producer points to charred oak with accents of brown sugar sweetness and vanilla, along with a full structure with rich caramel and notes of baking spices. In blind industry tastings, caramel, oak, cinnamon and vanilla recur on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied with more pronounced caramel and is well balanced. The palate is led by traditional Beam notes, with roasted nuts and woody char, vanilla, oak and caramel, and the sweetness is balanced by drier oak notes. The finish is short and simple, with baking spice, vanilla and toffee, plus a hint of spice without much burn.
Earlier incarnations of the spirit were recognised in industry competitions. The original 8-year-old "Double-Aged" edition won a gold outstanding award in the bourbon whiskey category at the International Wine & Spirit Competition 2013.
