Oban 12 Year Old Special Releases 2021 is a single malt Scotch from the Oban distillery in the western Highlands, bottled at cask strength as part of Diageo's annual Special Releases collection. This is a 12-year-old expression from ex-bourbon and refill casks, a pure malt from this West Highland distillery bottled at cask strength. The core is made up of freshly charred American oak casks.
Oban is one of the smallest and oldest distilleries in Scotland. It has just two pot stills and was founded in 1794 by brothers John and Hugh Stevenson. The malt is mashed and fermented, then double distilled in Oban's characteristic lantern-shaped pot stills; these are among the smallest in Scotland, limiting annual production to around 650,000 litres. The distillery's style is often described as a bridge between the Highland and island profiles. The spirit was bottled at a cask strength of 56.2% and, like all the entries in this collection, it is free of artificial colouring and non-chill-filtered.
The colour is light, pale gold. The nose offers cream, citrus, vanilla and salted caramel, alongside notes of new wood, dried chilli flakes and star anise; on the palate, an initially sweet, tart orange gives way to a marmalade note, followed by a lingering wave of pepper with hints of salted caramel and caramelised nuts. There are also maritime notes of crisp edible seaweed, crystalline salt and coarsely ground black pepper, while the flavour is fruity and lightly citrus-sweet, balanced by a pinch of salt in the mid-palate and a noticeable but never overwhelming spiciness from the charred casks. It is the cask strength that makes the difference here, delivering a more expressive version of Oban than the standard bottlings.
The whisky comes from the 2008 vintage. The Diageo Special Releases 2021 collection was built around the theme of the hidden stories of iconic distilleries, linked to the mythical creatures depicted on the bottles. Best enjoyed neat or with a splash of water.
