Real Companhia Velha Lágrima Porto is a sweet white Port from the Portuguese Douro region, distinguished by an early interruption of fermentation, which gives it concentrated sweetness and a liqueur-like texture. Lágrima represents one of the oldest traditions in the production of white Port, and its pronounced sweetness and liqueur-like texture are the result of an earlier interruption of fermentation, yielding a very concentrated white Port rich in fruity aromas.
The wine is a blend of indigenous Douro grape varieties. The cuvée is based on the Malvasia Fina, Donzelinho, Viosinho and Gouveio varieties. Behind the product stands one of the oldest wine houses in Portugal. Real Companhia Velha is the oldest and most emblematic wine company in Portugal, celebrating 260 years of presence in Port production, with some of the finest vineyards in the Douro region.
The vinification method sets Lágrima apart from standard white Ports. The wines intended for the Lágrima blend begin fermentation in stainless steel vats in contact with the skins (maceration), until fermentation is interrupted by the addition of grape distillate. The wine then matures in oak vats for a period of three years before bottling. The strength is 19%.
In the glass it shows a golden colour and a denser structure. This is a Port of golden hue, displaying concentration and texture, with great aromatic intensity and freshness, revealing notes of raisins harmoniously integrated with hints of oak derived from the ageing. Sweet and liqueur-like, filled with fruity flavours, with a long finish.
The producer recommends serving it chilled. The suggested serving temperature is 10–12°C. As a pairing it works well as an aperitif and with cheeses and desserts – served as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to soft goat's cheese and melon soup. The 0.05 l format is a mini bottle, intended for a single tasting.
