Talisker 8 Year Old Tidal Churn is a single malt from the distillery on the Isle of Skye, released as part of the Diageo Special Releases 2024 collection and bottled at cask strength of 58.7%. The whisky matured for eight years, and its character was built around an unusual treatment of the casks.
The Talisker distillery stands on the shore of Loch Harport in Carbost, at the foot of the Cuillin mountains, and has operated continuously since 1830, remaining for almost two centuries the only distillery on Skye. The 2024 edition is the second instalment of the Spirited Xchange series – a cask strength range focusing on unusual cask types. The name Tidal Churn refers to the wood treatment process: the original layer of char in the casks was removed using stones and water, after which the oak was given a second, light toasting to release fruity and vanilla notes.
The aroma reveals coastal accents – sea breeze, wet rock and iodine – with lemon and unripe pear in the second layer. Reviewers also point to an earthy background, peat smoke, peppercorns and oyster shells. On the palate, sweet notes of honey and fudge give way to an intense, burning spiciness; as the pepper and salty note subside, vanilla, sweet American oak and the classic Talisker pepperiness return, lingering long into the finish. The profile combines the distillery's signature smoke with a wave of pear and apple along with accents of seaweed, pepper and spices.
This is a cask strength bottling, part of the limited, annual Special Releases collection. The high alcohol content means the whisky takes dilution well – with the addition of water, a sweeter, vanilla note emerges on the nose.
