Tanduay Distillers

Tanduay Distillers is a Filipino rum producer, owned by local business magnate Lucio Tan. The Tanduay brand originates from the Bulacan distillery in Hagonoy, originally owned by Elías Menchatorre. In 1856, the distillery was acquired by Valentino Teus e Yrisarry and transferred to Ynchausti y Compañía, a Filipino enterprise managed by the Ynchausti family. Although the Hagonoy distillery was already operating at the time of acquisition, Ynchausti y Compañía decided to use its own founding date (1854) as the distillery's founding date – meaning we're talking about over 150 years of history. Six years later, a rectification plant was built on Isla de Tanduay in Manila, which became Tanduay's main distillery. There are no records of product names manufactured in the early days of operation, so it can generally be assumed that all alcoholic products from this period were sold without brand names and were identified only by generic names: "aguardiente" (Spanish for firewater), "tubâ" (palm wine), and "ron" (Spanish for rum). But the earliest mentions of the distillery refer to rum simply as "ron de destillería de Hagonoy y Tanduay" (literally "rum from the Hagonoy and Tanduay distillery"). It wasn't until the 1930s that the local rum was officially named Tanduay Rhum, and its packaging was changed from the previously used nearly 40-liter glass demijohn to the standard bottle sizes we know today. The brand's recent history began on May 18, 1988, when it was purchased by Twin Ace Holdings Corporation, a company owned by Lucio Tan. The new management began a modernization and expansion program of the facility, which increased the distillery's production capacity almost 50-fold. On July 30, 1999, Twin Ace Holdings changed the company name to Tanduay Distillers, Inc. The original Tanduay distillery was the main production facility for Tanduay rum until its closure in April 2013, when production was moved to a larger facility, while part of the original distillery will be converted into a museum showcasing the brand's history and heritage. Since 2021, Tanduay has been the world's largest rum brand (measured by liters sold).
