When a destructive earthquake struck the Sicilian town of Gibellina, near Palermo, in 1968, no one could have even imagined that it would transform into something good. The natural disaster completely destroyed the town, but its mayor believed he would find a way to rebuild it. Ludovico Corrao invited the most distinguished Italian artists to help: sculptors and architects to help resurrect Gibellina. As a result of these efforts, a new town was created about 20km away from the previous one, filled with unique works of art and the Cretto di Burri. Cretto di Burri is a monument-labyrinth created by Alberto Burri, who decided to pour cement over the area of the old town of Gibellina in such a way that the sculpture would perfectly reflect the grid of streets and houses that once stood there. The Tenute Orestiadi winery is also one of the symbols of the region's renewal, and the uniqueness of its wines is determined by the diversity of terroir, characterized by different soils and microclimates, ideal habitats for different varieties. They work with 4 types of soil. Black volcanic - producing exceptionally pure, mineral wines. Terra Rossa characterized by its red color, rich in sand, stones and iron microelements. Typical of southwestern Sicily, best for cultivating Perricone. Terra Bianca is soil rich in limestone and gypsum, with good water retention, ideal for growing white varieties such as Grillo, Catarratto, Grecanico, Inzolia and Zibibbo. Terra Nera is soil rich in silty-clay substances, compact and drought-resistant. It is located on hills inland around Trapani and is suitable for growing both red and white varieties. It is ideal for producing Nero d'Avola and from this soil come the grapes for producing Ludovico wines, named in honor of the historic mayor of Gibellina. The beginning of the winery's history dates back to 2008. And since 2018, La Gelsomina, also located on Mount Etna, has become part of this project. The winery is the main sponsor and organizer of a cultural festival, during which five squares in Gibellina feature different Mediterranean cultures, where you can buy wines and dishes from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
