Oban 21 Year Old is a limited single malt from the Highland region, bottled in 2018 as part of the annual Diageo Special Releases series. Distilled at Oban in 1996 and matured for 21 years in refill European oak butts before being bottled at its natural cask strength of 57.9%. Only 2,860 bottles of this release were produced.
The Oban distillery is among the smallest and at the same time one of the oldest working distilleries in Scotland. It was founded in 1794 by John and Hugh Stevenson, who were largely responsible for the creation of the seaside fishing settlement of Oban. The plant operates with just two stills, which translates into a modest output. Oban produces less than 650,000 litres a year from its two small stills, and its limited scale means that almost the entire production goes into the core range, leaving next to nothing for aged, extended-maturation editions. The 2018 release is only the second time a 21-year-old Oban has been officially released – the first came in 2013.
The European oak ex-sherry casks used here were of the refill type, so they left only a delicate imprint on the spirit. The refill European oak ex-sherry butts left a minimal sherry signature on the whisky – the previous Oban Special Release, also 21 years old, had considerably more of it. As a result, the character of the spirit itself comes to the fore.
The nose reveals a fresh, green, herbal profile along with coastal salt. A dry sea breeze opens with fresh foliage, petrichor and a slightly salty, briny character; then orange peel, pineapple, crumbly toffee and honey, with freshly ground peppercorns and a subtle herbal note running throughout, plus a touch of smoke. On the palate the whisky changes significantly in the glass. The palate is more fruity, with citrus and red fruits and a nutty depth, and the finish is long with a light note of mandarin at the end.
