Talisker Skye is a Scotch single malt whisky from the Talisker distillery on the Isle of Skye, introduced by Diageo in 2015, bottled without an age statement (NAS) at 45.8% ABV. The name refers to the island's landscape. Talisker Skye is a tribute to the varied scenery of the Isle of Skye – from gentle, tranquil shores to the dark, jagged peaks of the Cuillin range.
The Talisker distillery is among the oldest parts of the island's heritage. Founded in 1830 as the oldest distillery on the Isle of Skye, Talisker single malt is produced by the sea, which translates into its maritime, rugged character. The plant is operated by Diageo. A distinctive feature of production is its unusual stills: Talisker is fitted with swan neck lye pipes – a loop in the pipes that carries the vapours from the stills to the worm tubs, so that some of the spirit condenses before reaching the condenser, then returns to the stills and is distilled again.
In the case of the Skye expression, the profile is determined by the choice of casks. The whisky matures in a combination of American oak casks – refill and toasted – with a slightly greater proportion of toasted casks. This maturation approach shapes the style: Skye tempers the distillery's classically rugged character while retaining the smoky and sweet notes for which it is known.
On the nose there is fruit and a maritime accent. An initial citrus sweetness of fresh oranges gives way to soft mango, while underneath runs sea air with seaweed, driftwood and salt. On the palate the whisky is medium-bodied and soft in texture, at first sweet and coating, with light smoke and a tingle on the tongue, quickly becoming more pronounced and dry, with hot spiciness. The finish leads towards dryness: it is drier, of medium length, with a lasting, smooth aftertaste in which light peaty, dying embers can be found.
This item comes in a cardboard box with a cup included in the set. The producer recommends serving it best in a Talisker Rocks glass, neat or with a splash of water.
