Casamigos Anejo is an añejo-category tequila from Los Altos in Jalisco, made from 100% Weber blue agave and matured for over a year in American white oak barrels. The brand was created in 2013 by George Clooney, Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman, and today belongs to the Diageo group.
The agave comes from the red clay soils and cool climate of the highlands (Los Altos) of Jalisco, Mexico, where the raw material is hand-selected. The agave piñas are roasted in traditional brick ovens for 72 hours, and the Master Distiller uses a special blend of yeasts; the distinctive profile is the result of an 80-hour fermentation. The distillate is produced through two distillations. Production is carried out at the Productos Finos de Agave distillery (NOM 1416), and this añejo matures for 14 months in ex-whiskey barrels. The producer states a minimum of 12 months' ageing for the añejo category; in practice this version spends 14 months in wood.
The profile is dominated by the influence of oak on the sweetness of roasted agave. Slow maturation builds a rounded, velvety texture with notes of caramel, vanilla and warm spice. The colour is deep amber. The expression is less bright and sweet on the nose than the brand's reposado, with a touch of vanilla and accents of leather and barrel spice.
Bottled at 40% ABV. It works well for sipping neat or in classic cocktails – the producer suggests an Old Fashioned variant with tequila instead of whiskey.
