Glenkinchie The Distillers Edition 2018 is a Lowland single malt from the Glenkinchie distillery, double matured and finished in Amontillado sherry casks. Distilled in 2006, it was bottled in 2018 at 43% ABV.
Glenkinchie is one of the few remaining working distilleries in the Lowland region. Glenkinchie lies in Scotland's Lowland region, where only three distilleries are still in operation today, and the site is just some 20 miles from Edinburgh. Based in Pencaitland, the distillery produces a dry, nutty spirit and boasts some of the largest pot stills in Scotland. The Distillers Edition line is Diageo's in-house range, in which single malts from various regions of Scotland undergo a second maturation.
Maturation takes place in two stages. The whisky first matures in refill American and European oak casks, and is then finished in re-charred American oak casks that previously held Amontillado sherry. Amontillado is a type of sherry with a delicate, dry and nutty character, which harmonises well with the distillery's light, dry profile.
On the nose and palate, dry notes from the wine intertwine with sweeter, nutty tones of barley and wood. On the nose, dry wine-derived accents mingle with sweet, nutty notes of malt and oak, while the palate is slightly oily, with malt and dried fruit, white grapes and a warming woody spiciness, before a long finish full of oak and white pepper. There is also maltiness, dryness and spice in the form of cloves and ginger, with a touch of toasted oak, a hint of tobacco and roasted peanuts. The finish is led by warming spices and is of medium length.
