We present a spirit of cult status in the world of Scotch whisky – the thirteen-year-old Springbank edition from the acclaimed Local Barley series. This release, with a run of 8,400 bottles, is one of the most sought-after items in the collection of any collector and lover of Campbeltown whisky. The Local Barley line comprises whiskies made from barley sourced from local farmers. Individual editions may differ in the barley variety used in production, age, cask composition, as well as bottling strength, which makes each edition exceptional and unique. The whisky is produced at the legendary Springbank distillery, founded in 1928, where the entire production process, from malting to bottling, takes place on site.
The whisky on offer was made from Belgravia barley, grown on the nearby Glencraigs farm. In keeping with the distillery's artisanal ethos, the entire batch of grain was one hundred percent subjected to traditional floor malting on the distillery grounds. The lightly peated distillate (approx. 10-12 ppm), following Springbank's characteristic 2.5-fold distillation, was filled into casks in June 2010. The whisky is a composition of distillates matured for thirteen years in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks in proportions of 60% / 40%. It was bottled in December 2023, in natural colour, without chill filtration, at natural cask strength of 54.1%.
The aroma and flavour profile of this edition perfectly captures the complex character of whisky from the Springbank distillery and the Campbeltown region. The aroma is dominated by notes of vanilla, beeswax and ripe orchard fruits, which smoothly intertwine with subtle, earthy smoke and a sea breeze. On the palate, the whisky offers a dense, oily texture. The sweetness of toffee and honey interweaves with accents of dried fruits from the sherry casks, ultimately giving way to dry mineral tones. The finish is long, crowned with a delicate saltiness and accents of ash and smoke.
The presented specimen, together with its original box, has been preserved in exemplary condition. Taking into account the historical dynamics of value growth of all Local Barley series releases on the secondary market, the bottle on offer is a fully-fledged investment asset and an undisputed adornment of any collection.
